Pure Propane used in Low Temperature Refrigeration Applications

Over the past several months HRAI staff have fielded questions and concerns regarding R290.  In consultation with HRAI Manufacturer member company Messer Canada Inc., they have shared a fact sheet that can be found on HRAI’s website.  Key considerations to take into account pertaining to safety, storage, concerns regarding the cylinder valve, transportation and more are addressed in the fact sheet.

R290 is a class 3 refrigerant identified by ASHRAE Standard 34 refrigerant safety group and it is classified as a dangerous good under the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations of Canada.  It is a highly flammable compressed gas and should only be handled by experienced and properly instructed persons.  It is not suitable for retrofitting existing fluorocarbon refrigerant systems. R290 is used in a range of refrigeration and air conditioning applications such as display cases and window air conditioners. The use of R290 appears to be increasing due to its low GWP (global warming potential).
