Waste360 recently announced the group of winners for its Top 40 under 40 awards, which includes two Canadian waste management professionals, who have played an active role in the Ontario Waste Management Association.

Patrick Dovigi, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of GFL Environmental Inc., and Jim McKay, General Manager of the City of Toronto’s Solid Waste Management Services Division, were both selected for the American publication’s prestigious award, which will be presented at the WasteExpo in New Orleans, taking place from May 8 to 11.

A panel of judges evaluated hundreds of nominations and consulted with an external advisor to select this year’s winners and recognize “inspiring and innovative professionals under the age of 40 whose work in waste, recycling and organics has made a significant contribution to the industry.” This year’s group of winners is the first to include Canadian waste management professionals.

McKay, who will be participating in the awards ceremony and presenting at the WasteExpo, said he was surprised, but pleased to find out that his staff had nominated him for the award.

“Being selected for this award is not only a tremendous honour for me, but it also recognizes the hard work and international leadership the City of Toronto continues to provide on solid waste management,” McKay said. "Winning an individual award such as this is always great, but I wouldn't be where I am today without the incredible support of all those around me"

McKay started his career in 1999 as a waste management planner and later took on a role as a consultant working with municipalities across Canada and the United States on some of North America’s largest solid waste projects and programs. In addition to his current role at the City of Toronto, he has also been a long-serving director on the OWMA’s board.

Dovigi, who will also be travelling to New Orleans for the WasteExpo, said he was pleased to have been selected for the award after a busy year in which GFL marked two major milestones.

“It’s a great honour to be recognized among your peers for making a significant contribution to your industry. But this award wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work and dedication of my team at GFL,” Dovigi said.

“Our company has achieved so much over the last year. We recently passed the billion-dollar revenue mark and expanded our operations into Michigan. These achievements reflect the ability and vision of our team and have helped position our company for continued growth and expansion across the country.”

Dovigi founded GFL in 2007 after serving as the president of an environmental services company for three years and gaining executive-level experience in the finance, construction and entertainment sectors. He also served for several years on the OWMA’s board.

GFL now provides waste management services in all Canadian provinces except Prince Edward Island, and has been acknowledged as one of the country’s fastest growing environmental services companies.
