Environment and Climate Change Canada released a technical guide this month to assist remote and northern communities with developing waste management plans and facilities.

The Solid Waste Management for Northern and Remote Communities Planning and Technical Guidance Document focuses on Canada’s territories, but can also be applied to indigenous and small communities across the country.

Sections two and three of the document provide advice on improving waste management systems, selecting a location for a municipal solid waste (MSW) facility and siting landfill cells. The remaining sections (four to nine) offer guidance on the design, operation and closure of MSW facilities.
