Testing the performance of IEDs and their communication in substations and laboratories

With IEC 61850, the international standard for power utility communications, protection, and communication are increasingly converging. Protection engineers need IEC 61850 testing devices and analysis tools that are able to handle the new communication mechanisms and that offer support for acquiring the necessary knowledge easily.

The following products, available through OMICRON, can assist in accomplishing tasks easily and conveniently:

  • The CMC family of relay test sets provides all the required functions for testing and commissioning with GOOSE and Sampled Values. The CMC and Test Universe Software also support the Client/Server (MMS) communication. The IEC 61850 Client/Server module provides a new and easy way to automatically set an IED to test mode and to reset it to its original state when the test is finished. SCADA communication testing can be incorporated into the protection test procedure.
  • The binary I/O terminal ISIO 200 gives system integrators and panel builders the ability to put binary I/Os where they need them and integrate into IEC 61850 systems.
  • Manufacturers, protection and substation automation engineers can rely on the support of the IEDScout software tool for working with IEC 61850 devices. It serves many applications and performs numerous useful functions, including access to the IEDs acting as a Client, investigation of data traffic in-depth and IED simulation including GOOSE and Reports.
  • The SVScout software enables protection engineers and IED developers to visualize Sampled values.
  • DANEO 400, the new hybrid measurement system for power utility automation systems, allows users to record and analyze both conventional signals and IEC 61850 data traffic. It can be used in different systems and network topologies and serves many use cases like fault recording, verification of IEC 61850 communication, supervision/monitoring of network traffic and assessment of network performance.
  • The CPC 100 multi-function primary test system performs closed-loop testing of Merging Units and Sampled Values applications by injecting a signal to the primary side of current / voltage sensors and reading the Sampled Values streams back from the network.
