One officer’s tireless dedication to help combat human trafficking

As a thirteen-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, Officer Lourdes Nieto is all-too familiar with the dangers faced by her city’s most vulnerable citizens. Day in day out, she is reminded of the brutal injustices that can befall those who are socially and economically disadvantaged. One of the most heinous crimes against these men, women and children, is human trafficking.

Currently, the International Labour Organization estimates that there are 20.9 million victims of human trafficking globally. In 2015, 25,000 of those resided in the U.S.—the majority of which were women and kids. Not only is Officer Nieto deeply aware of these grim statistics, but she’s also seen the effects of their unspeakable injustices up close. She’s helped heal victims who were deprived of their normal lives and subjected to horrible indecencies to the direct profit of the perpetrators.

As part of her efforts, Officer Nieto has been working tirelessly to train her peers in recognizing the signs of a crime and countering the rate of frequency. She also conducts community information sessions to help citizens learn more about human trafficking, while personally engaging with survivors at a local safe house—cooking for them, talking with them, learning from them and doing whatever she can to help them heal. All this, on top of her daily responsibilities as both a police officer and a single mother.

For her tireless commitment and unwavering dedication to this cause, Officer Nieto has gone above and beyond the call of duty. In doing so she was named an American Red Cross 2016 Law Enforcement Hero. Her compassion and support are not only helping victims recover, but inspiring others to keep innovating so first responders can be their best in the moments that matter.
