The inaugural “Supporting Women in Trades” Conference took place in Halifax, Nova Scotia on November 6 and 7, 2018 and Angie Mantei, HRAI Education Manager, represented HRAI at this event. The conference was set-up by the Canadian Apprenticeship Forum – Forum Canadien sur l’apprentissage (CAF-FCA) which is a non-profit organization that connects Canada’s apprenticeship community.

Participants came together to learn about some great initiatives underway across Canada to help address the challenges faced by women working in the skilled trades.  This event was open to women in trades, employers, labour organizations, government, educators and other advocates for diversity and inclusion.

The keynote address was delivered by Mandy Rennehan, Blue-Collar CEO & Founder of Freshco.ca (not the grocery store), an energetic, live example of a woman making it big in the trades.

Originally CAF hoped for 150 registrants, a number which they quickly surpassed.  They expanded the ballroom at the hotel to add in additional seating to accommodate the 360 folks that were registered and involved and turned away 150+ interested folks.
