The City of Coquitlam in British Columbia passes zoning amendment Bylaw No 4902, 2018 to Limit the Siting of Exterior Mechanical Equipment and Vent Terminations for Central Heating/Cooling Equipment in Residential Interior Side Yards. The bylaw was passed on January 28, 2019.

HRAI staff was extremely concerned to learn that the City of Coquitlam has introduced sidewall venting restrictions aimed at heat pumps, which are described as mechanical equipment located in residential side yards, and sidewall venting. HRAI members were not given ample time to respond to this amendment. The bylaw limits sidewall venting and placement of heat pumps to front, back or exterior side yard. Exterior side yard is a side without a neighbour like a corner home would have on the street side. Fireplaces and domestic hot water equipment is exempt and are allowed to sidewall vent, as they are not classified as central heating/cooling equipment.

Stakeholders have been in discussion with the City to determine a workable path forward. We will keep members posted on that front. For more information contact Caroline Czajko at HRAI, e-mail: cczajko@hrai.ca
