HRAI is pleased with the provincial government’s recent launch of a new marketing campaign to promote careers within the skilled trades.  On Jan. 10, 2020, provincial Minister of Labour, Monte McNaughton, MPP, Lambton, Kent, Middlesex launched the multi-media campaign which includes a series of videos and graphics that are being shown at movie theatres, Tim Horton’s outlets and online through various social media outlets over the next eight weeks.

The ads are targeted at young people investigating potential career opportunities as well as at parents/guardians who play a significant role in helping youth decide their career direction.

Designed to provide positive information and awareness about the trades and about the fulfilling and lucrative careers available, these ads are another step in the continuing process to address the ongoing labour shortage in these sectors.

Minister McNaughton’s office last week indicated that over the next few weeks, the minister will continue to conduct a ‘listening tour’ in order to more fully understand opportunities to engage stakeholders and to recruit more people into the skilled trades.  HRAI has requested that the Minister meet with HRAI members as part of this tour.

McNaughton has said his office will look for ways to streamline and to reform the systems and process by which people apply for apprenticeships and to encourage businesses to take on more apprentices.  A new government portal at ontario.ca/trades has been created with information on Ontario’s trades and apprenticeships systems.

HRAI encourages members to watch and to share these new videos and information about the skilled trades through your personal and professional networks.
