HRAI Member Associates and Contractors, as well as builders, renovators, building officials and HRAI staff, enjoyed a day long forum hosted last month by the Hamilton-Halton Home Builders Association. The “LEEP Gas Mechanicals Technology Forum” was also supported by the Canadian Home Builders’ Association, Union Gas and the Canadian Gas Association.

Participants learned first-hand about innovative solutions using different types of gas mechanical systems. It was great to see industry experts sharing advice and lessons learned when it comes to working with home designers, window suppliers, HVAC designers and HVAC contractors. Heating and cooling needs are definitely changing in response to ongoing changes in the housing market. As reported by Andy Oding, Chair, CHBA Technical Research Committee “ The home building industry needs small gas heating systems for today’s compact efficient home.  They need to be well sized and capable of long run cycles at part-load conditions.”

NRCan shared best practice guides with participants including a zoning decision guide and a zoning duct design guide.  NRCan also mapped HVAC challenges to possible solutions.  Recommendations to builders included; for optimum performance to be achieved, it is recommended that all mechanical systems be commissioned by a qualified HVAC technician to verify equipment is setup and operating as designed.
