The Ontario government continues to make legislative and programming changes that appear to benefit the skilled trades sector. In October, this included the recently redesigned Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development, with Monte McNaughton, MPP, Lambton, Kent, Essex as Minister. HRAI is working to determine how this change will impact our sector.

On Oct. 31, the education minister, Stephen Lecce, announced an expansion of Skilled Trades programs in the Specialist High Skills Major program. Find the details here.

Specialist High Skills Majors let students focus on a career path that matches their skills and interests while meeting the requirements of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).

HRAI is pleased the province is investing additional support to encourage high school students to consider entering the skilled trades sector.

Estimates indicate that by 2021, one in five new jobs in Ontario will be created in trades-related occupations with some employers already experiencing a shortage of workers. HRAI members interested in helping with efforts to promote the many varied career opportunities in the skilled trades sector should connect with us to find out more.
