The 2019 edition of the Alberta Building Code and the 2017 edition of the National Energy Code for Buildings (NECB) are coming into effect in the province of Alberta, beginning April 1, 2019.

In addition, there is a six-month transition period, to facilitate the transition to the new codes. For a building whose permit application was received by the municipality during the six-month transition period (i.e. on or after April 1, 2019 and before October 1, 2019), a person may choose to construct the new building based on the new code or previous code edition.

For more information on the new Alberta building and energy efficiency codes and applicability of the transition period, HRAI recommends to check the notice from Alberta Municipal Affairs.

A PowerPoint presentation covering the new changes is available here.
