On May 8, 2018, Secondary and Post-Secondary students from various schools across Southern Ontario were vying at the chance to win a Gold, Silver, or Bronze medal for their performance in the ‘Heating Systems Technician’ Competition at the Skills Ontario show.

The Skills Ontario Competition is Canada's largest skilled trade and technology competition, bringing together 67 trades, 2,000 student competitors and 20,000 spectators over three days (May 7-9, 2018) at the Toronto Congress Centre.

The Skills Ontario Competition offers a unique opportunity for top students in their field to demonstrate that they are the best of the best. Within our Heating System Technician Competition, our Secondary School student Gold Medalist, Matt Walter from Peel District School Board, won over 3 of his peers. And, the Gold medalist out of 15 students in the Post-Secondary School competition was Daniel Curry from UA Local 46.

The rankings were as follows:

Secondary School ‘Heating System Technician’ Competition
Gold Medal winner:  Matt Walter, Peel District School Board
Silver Medal winner: Lucas D’Annibale, Thames Valley District School Board
Bronze Medal winner:  Mason McLeod, Upper Canada District School Board

Post-Secondary School ‘Heating System Technician’ Competition
Gold Medal winner: Daniel Curry, United Association Local 46
Silver Medal winner: Zach Hiltz, Centennial College
Bronze Medal winner: Kevin Salemink, Cambrian College

Students were tested on their interview, practical and theoretical skill sets over a period of four hours. The interview component involved a sectioned off 2-person panel; practical involved hands-on wiring, as well as installing a humidifier and performing a diagnostic test (Post-Secondary), or disassembling and reassembling of a blower motor (Secondary); and the theoretical component involved an open code book test with multiple choice and short answers.

The Heating System Technician Competition was supported by 25 dedicated industry experts who volunteered their time and energy in creating a dynamic experience in a carefully constructed heating system environment.
