hrai3Investments in building construction in Canada in 2018 increased 2.5% to about $170 billion. Commercial and industrial buildings accounted for most of the overall sector growth, rising 7.6% to about $54 billion. Industrial buildings grew the quickest, at almost 24% year over year.

Total industry growth was 7.2% in 2017, so there was some softening in 2018. For Alberta, it was a difficult year with construction dropping about 10%. About half of all 2018 industry growth was generated by Ontario.

According to Mechanical Business Magazine, single-family home construction declined by $4.3 billion, however, the decline was replaced by multi-family residential, which rose $4.6 billion. Over the past three years, investment in the multi-unit residential has been concentrated in Quebec, Ontario, British Columbia and Prince Edward Island.
