The Canadian Construction Association’s Person of the Year Award has gone to Mary-Anne Bowcott, owner-operator of Westcom Plumbing & Gas Ltd., in the Victoria, BC area.

Bowcott, is a journeyman plumber, Class B gasfitter, and certified steep-slope roofer. Although she has many years experience in the trades, being a company owner is a relatively new experience. She established Westcom in 2015 and has achieved impressive results in just a few years. One of her priorities has been to hire other women, proving they can easily compete in a male-dominated field.

The company has grown quickly and Bowcott has been recognized with a couple of awards from the local Chamber of Commerce in Sooke, BC; and also a BC Construction Industry Leader Award. Some women have been welcomed to the team despite having limited experience (“as long as they are hard workers”), a testament to Bowcott’s mentoring and leadership strengths.

The company is clearly well regarded in the community and this latest award, from the Canadian Construction Association, is obviously well deserved. Congratulations to Mary-Anne Bowcott and the talented group at Westcom Plumbing.
