As you probably know by now, the Ontario Government has announced it will be terminating the Ontario College of Trades. Tradespersons, apprentices and their employers in the province may be wondering what will come in its place.

HRAI is actively engaged with the Minister of Training Colleges and Universities on this matter. We are being asked to provide constructive input into the deliberations concerning a new governance system to guide trades training and apprenticeship in a way that works effectively for all stakeholders (tradespersons, apprentices, business owners, trainers and of course, the public). In these discussions, consideration must be given to a number of key elements in the apprenticeship system, including: apprenticeship intake/registration processes; promotion of trades as a career choice; enforcement of certification regulations; how to approve new trades or adapt existing ones; and more. Among the questions to consider are: who should handle which roles (government or an independent agency)?  How should the system be funded (who pays)? How to ensure industry’s voice is heard?

Responding to this questionnaire will help HRAI to develop more constructive and informed advice to the government as it works towards a new administrative solution for this important function. Thank you for your participation!
