HRAI is asking all members in Ontario to take five minutes to complete an important survey regarding the administration of trades and apprenticeships in the province.  The survey was sent on Wednesday, October 21, 2020.

As readers may recall, in 2018, the then-new Ontario government declared that it would eliminate and replace the Ontario College of Trades (OCOT) with a new system.  As of 2020, while the College is slowly being eliminated, it continues to provide necessary services (i.e. license and certification renewals, registration of apprenticeships, enforcement and other activities).

After several years of promising to consult with industry, the Ontario government recently announced it will be conducting a consultation on the future of the trades and apprenticeship in the province -- and HRAI will be engaging in that process. This consultation will tackle some of the bigger questions about how the apprenticeship system should be administered.  When more is known about that process, HRAI will reach out to members for input on those broader questions.

In the meantime, HRAI would like to better understand what, if any, immediate challenges members are facing with the apprenticeship system -- and what potential solutions you might recommend.  Even prior to the onset of COVID-19, HRAI was hearing anecdotal evidence from members about administrative challenges related to apprenticeships but, to gain a better perspective on these concerns, concluded that a short survey of members would be helpful.

HRAI will use the information provided to develop recommendations to present to the Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development.  This information will also help inform HRAI’s initial approach to the upcoming skilled trades and apprenticeship consultations.

HRAI thanks you in advance for your participation.
