On June 7th, HRAI wrote to James Orr, Alberta’s Director of Standards Development, Building and Fire in support of the Canadian Institute of Plumbing and Heating’s request for a variance to Alberta Building Code 2014, Section 9.36, Prescriptive Energy Efficiency for Houses.

HRAI and CIPH are concerned with the requirement for insulation for a below grade heated slab.  HRAI believes that such a requirement will make the option of installing an in floor heating system not economically feasible.  HRAI further supports rationale prepared by CIPH that this requirement is not necessary and that the Province of Alberta provide a variance to the heated slab insulation requirements.
