As part of its increased emphasis on political engagement in Ontario, HRAI continues to meet with elected representatives and their staff to discuss legislative and regulatory priorities of the membership. Wherever possible these meetings include volunteers who work or reside in the constituency of the MPP.  HRAI thanks members for taking time from their busy schedules to participate in these meetings.  For meetings held in the last month, HRAI thanks:

  • Nairn Reid, Owner & President, Ottawa Plumbing and Heating for meeting with local representative Goldie Ghamari, MPP Carleton. In addition to her role as MPP, Ghamari also Chairs the Standing Committee on General Government, which oversees legislation such as the Consumers’ Protection Act.
  • Roger Grochmal, President & CEO, AtlasCare for meeting with his local representative, Jane McKenna, MPP Burlington.  In addition to her role as MPP, Ms. McKenna is the Parliamentary Assistant to the Hon. Monte McNaughton, Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development.
  • Rainy Chappelle, President, PlanCaster Heating and Air for meeting with her representative the Hon. Doug Downey, MPP Barrie-Springwater-Oro-Medonte.  In addition to his role as an MPP, Minister Downey is also the Attorney General of Ontario and a member of the provincial cabinet.

Key issues discussed in these meetings included:

  • Ventilation and Indoor Air Quality:  The expertise the HVACR sector and HRAI can provide to ensure appropriate industry standards are in place to ensure safe, secure indoor air and ventilation particularly for schools, Long Term Care homes, retirement homes, and healthcare facilities and commercial buildings.
  • Skills Training and Governance:  Members continue to express concerns about ongoing administrative delays for renewals of licenses and certifications as well as apprenticeship registration.
  • Skills Shortage:  There are continued concerns about the skilled trades shortage and the need for consultation with the sector regarding industry governance and training to address ongoing issues, in particular, with apprenticeship training.

These meetings are valuable opportunities to educate MPPs about the HVACR sector and HRAI while building relationships to advance members’ issues. HRAI appreciates that members are willing to participate on behalf of the industry.  It is always impactful for elected officials to hear directly from HRAI’s members (constituents and business owners) regarding issues related to the HVACR sector.
