The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released the ENERGY STAR Connected Criteria for Large Load Products Discussion Guide. The deadline to submit comments on this ENERGY STAR Discussion Guide is March 18, 2019.

EPA has maintained optional connected criteria in ENERGY STAR specifications for several products since 2011, and is looking to advance their strategy on connected criteria for a subset of ENERGY STAR products to encourage additional efficiency and load flexibility potential. This Discussion Guide lays out the general landscape of grid evolution along with detailed considerations for the following HVAC products: central air conditioners and air source heat pumps, and water heaters. Each product specific section contains requests for feedback that EPA is seeking from stakeholders to enable the program to more fully address connected functionality for these products.

EPA will host a webinar on March 7, 2019 from 1:00-3:00pm ET outlining the content of this discussion guide and inviting stakeholder conversation about it. Stakeholders are encouraged to register for this webinar here.
