Sometimes we take modern technology for granted, but we don’t have to look very far back in the history of flight to see just how far we have come.

I was impressed by the compilation of clips, set out below – but particularly the early helicopter clips.

The principles of flight are largely unchanged, but the early days serve as a stark reminder of just how the technology has been refined. Composite construction, HFDM, stroking seats, fire-resistant fuel cells, SAS and autopilot systems, GPS, ADS-B, co-axial and intermeshing rotor systems, NOTAR systems, tilt-rotor systems, and electric motors – just to name a few. It makes you wonder what the next 80 years will bring.
