It can be hard to keep your cool when the snow flies and energy bills rise. Winter in Alberta can be tough on businesses like yours. Keeping your tenants and employees comfortable while keeping costs down is a tricky balancing act. We asked the experts at ATCOenergy for some smart winter tips.

Increasing energy efficiency has the added benefit of lowering regulated transmission and distribution costs, carbon levy’s and taxes associated with energy consumption.

Here are 5 simple ways to help save energy this winter:

1. Check for air leaks around doors and windows. The simplest way to keep winter from getting you down is to keep it outside. Even small drafts can lead to big costs when the temperature dips. Seal any leaks you find with caulking or weatherstripping.

2. Turn down the dial. Dropping your thermostat just one degree saves about 1 per cent on your heating bill. Choose a smart thermostat to automatically lower the temperature another 2 or 3 degrees overnight.

3. Insulate your hot water tank. Throw a protective insulating blanket around your hot water heater to reduce heat loss by up to 25 to 40 per cent. Pre-cut water tank insulators are relatively inexpensive and can cut the cost of heating your water by up to 16 per cent.

4. Look up. Swapping out just one 60-watt light bulb for an LED bulb can save around $1/month. Upgrading all your lightbulbs to LEDs is a smart choice. They use 75 per cent less energy than incandescent bulbs, and last 50 times longer—more than eleven years. If you’ve already switched to LEDs, consider installing motion detectors so they turn off automatically when they’re not needed.

5. Get an energy audit. Set up a complimentary appointment with an energy advisor who can provide a cost comparison on your electricity and gas. They can connect you with an energy auditor to help you find more ways to increase your energy efficiency and lower your energy bill. Even if you think you’ve done everything you can to prepare for winter in Alberta, a trusted energy advisor can help you find even more ways to save.
